OUR STORY
In former years, the area that is now known as Mitchell Point was called “Fullers Point”. The property was purchased in 1920 by the Oneida County Y.M.C.A and renamed “Camp Triangle.” The Y.M.C.A operated Camp Triangle for many years on this ten-acre tract. Around 1945, the Y.M.C.A sold the “Point” to Henry Graves, who then sold the property to Edward Vantine, Sr. Mr. Vantine subsequently sold the Point to the A. M.A (American Management Association) in September of 1955. On the A.M.A. Point was a flagpole in front of which was a grand old brass locomotive bell. This was a gift from the President of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. It was one of the locomotive bells from the railroad. The train engine from which it came had been nicknamed “Puffer Bell” and so this was what the bell was named when it came to the Point. The beach area at the Point was named “Puffer Bell Beach”. The flagpole and the Puffer Bell still remain as a fixture at Mitchell Point today. Following the purchase by the A.M.A., the name was changed to “Mitchell Point”. This was in honor of Donald G. Mitchell, one of the sponsors and a frequent speaker at “Operation Enterprise” which was a management training program for young adults that was held each summer at the “Point”. Mr. Mitchell worked with Pepsi and was Vice-President of Marriott, among other things.
In 2002, Wesley Wendt Sr., a very successful entrepreneur and real estate businessman who had operated multiple businesses in the Vernon area, was driving in the area when he spotted Mitchell Point. He instantly fell in love with its beauty and became interested in purchasing the property. In negotiations with A.M.A., he settled on a deal that would not only gain him the Mitchell Point property but all of A.M.A’s holdings on Lake Moraine which included the White Eagle Conference Center. Wesley and his wife Tammy proceeded to make Mitchell Point their summer home and began to refurbish the buildings and cabins at the Point so that they could begin to rent them out to guests to enjoy the lake. In March of 2019, Wesley passed away while vacationing in Florida. Today, Tammy is still actively managing the Mitchell Point facility and is on property to make sure that all guest are able to fully enjoy the beauty that this property has to offer.
